Bali Hai

Palm trees, white sand, and Mandalay Bay hanging over your left shoulder. The most ridiculous piece of golf real estate in America, and we keep going back.

4 stars Absurd. Expensive. Do it.

Four of us, one tee sheet, and a skyline for a backdrop

There is no good reason for a golf course to exist on that piece of land. It's the most valuable dirt in Nevada and somebody planted three thousand palm trees and a bunch of white sand on it instead of another tower. We are extremely glad they did.

We brought Dad and the boys. Nathan and Jordan were at that age where they hit it past me without commenting on it, which is somehow worse than commenting on it. Dad played his usual round: nothing spectacular, nothing in trouble, and somehow right there at the end.

You spend the whole day with the Luxor pyramid and the Mandalay Bay gold in every photograph. It never stops being funny.

Four swings, one hole

We took a picture of every one of us on the same tee, which was less about the golf and more about the fact that all four of us were standing in the same place at the same time, which does not happen often once your kids are grown.

Nathan first, then Jordan, then Dad, then me. Three of those swings were good.

Jordan on the tee. The wide view. And a later trip — same course, same palms, different decade.
The verdict
4 stars

It loses a star on price, because you are paying a Strip premium for a course that is very good rather than great. It keeps four because there is nowhere else on earth you can play golf like this, and because the staff treat a foursome of tourists like members.

Best non-golf afternoon of any trip on this site, for reasons that should be obvious.
