Nine holes in a canyon a mile from the Pacific. Short, walkable, completely charming, and over before either of us could get properly annoyed.
We are going to keep saying this until people believe us: a good nine-hole short course is the single best format for a couple. Nobody gets tired, nobody gets bored, nobody has time to build up a grievance about the seventh hole. You play, you finish, you go get a drink while it's still light.
The Ranch sits in a canyon with hills going straight up on both sides and a marine layer that burns off around ten. You walk it. There are umbrella pines and a creek and the ocean is close enough to smell without being visible from most of the holes.
Sandy played with a friend and I tagged along for part of it, which is another thing short courses are good for — you can bring anyone, at any level, and it works.
You finish in the late afternoon with the sun coming down the canyon and turning the hills gold, and then you sit on the terrace above the ninth and watch the last groups come in.
That's the review. Two hours of golf, one hour on the terrace, and a drive back down to Laguna in the good light.
It's not a championship test and it isn't trying to be. It's the most repeatable golf experience for two people we've found — short, beautiful, walkable, and it ends with a view instead of a scorecard argument.
If you're a couple where one of you plays more than the other, start here. Genuinely.
