The trip

Somebody had to explain the FedEx Cup to Dad four separate times

Five guys, one week, and a golf tournament where the scoring system requires a diagram. We got there early each day, walked the whole property, picked a hole, sat down, and let the tournament come to us.

East Lake is a serious old golf course — Bobby Jones's home club, red brick clubhouse sitting up at the top of the hill, big trees, and that walk up 18 with the water on the left that you have watched on television for twenty years.

The best hour of the week was on a green somewhere on the front nine, close enough to hear the players talk to their caddies. That's the thing you can't get from TV: how quiet it actually is, and how hard they hit it.

The group

Three sons, one grandfather, and a lot of walking

Everybody wore a hat, everybody got sunburned, and everybody had a strong opinion about who was going to win. Most of us were wrong.

There's a particular pleasure in watching your grown sons and your father talk to each other about golf all day and realising you don't need to be part of the conversation.

Me and Dad. The bar afterward, every night. And the moment we all got on television, which we have not stopped talking about since.
The verdict
5 stars

If you have never been to a PGA Tour event in person, go. Pick a hole, sit down, and stay there for two hours. You will learn more about golf than in a year of watching.

And if you can bring your father and your kids at the same time, do that. That's the actual review.
